AMA Director-General meets with WHO Director-General at World Health Organization headquarters in Geneva

AMA Director-General Dr. Delese Mimi Darko visited the World Health Organization headquarters in Geneva and met with Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.

They discussed progress in operationalizing the African Medicines Agency (AMA) and areas of continued collaboration. Dr. Tedros pledged his support for AMA, an agency that is critical for strengthening regulatory systems across Africa.

The AMA team also engaged with Dr. Rogério Gaspar and his WHO Regulation and Prequalification team to align on key activities, including:

• Participation of AMA assessors and inspectors in WHO PQ programs
• Continued use of African experts in WHO PQ
• Collaboration on safety and quality monitoring
• Capacity building for NRAs and RECs
• Evaluation of medical devices (IVDs and IMDs)
• Preparations for the African Medicines Regulatory Conference that AMA and WHO will jointly host in 2026

This partnership is vital for ensuring access to safe, quality medicines and health products across Africa. Exciting times ahead as AMA and WHO work together to deliver impact for Africa and beyond!
